Ghana has moved to calm market jitters in the global cashew trade, with the Tree Crops Development Authority (TCDA) formally assuring international buyers that the country’s Raw Cashew Nuts (RCN) for the 2025/2026 season are of high quality and strong commercial value.
Speaking at the 12th World Cashew Conference in Dubai, the Chief Executive Officer of the TCDA, Dr Andrews Osei Okrah, dismissed claims circulating in parts of the global market that Ghana’s cashew output this season was substandard.
“Ghana’s Raw Cashew Nuts for the 2025/2026 season are of very good quality, and we expect a strong outturn with high Kernel Outturn Ratio (KOR), as has been the case over the years,” Dr Osei Okrah told an audience of traders, processors, investors and industry leaders.
The declaration effectively opens Ghana’s cashew trading season, sending a clear signal to buyers in Asia, Europe and the Middle East that supply fundamentals remain intact.
Quality, Volume and Traceability
Dr Osei Okrah underscored that Ghana’s cashew sector operates within a structured, regulated and traceable supply chain, a distinction that continues to differentiate the country from several competing origins.
According to him, the TCDA’s regulatory oversight ensures consistency in quality, protects farmers, and reduces the risks associated with unverified sourcing.
He urged international buyers and exporters to transact only with registered and licensed actors, stressing that this allows the Authority to intervene promptly when disputes or operational challenges arise.
“When business is conducted within the regulated framework, the TCDA is better positioned to support stakeholders and protect the integrity of Ghana’s cashew industry,” he said.
Regulatory Reforms Reshape the Sector
Since assuming office, Dr Osei Okrah has overseen a series of reforms aimed at bringing discipline, transparency and long-term sustainability to Ghana’s cashew industry.
A central pillar of these reforms has been the inclusive stakeholder engagement process that led to the joint validation and announcement of cashew pricing for the season—an approach designed to align the interests of farmers, aggregators, exporters and processors.
Industry observers say this pricing framework has helped stabilise the market, reduced opportunistic trading practices and improved predictability for investors.
Enforcement Takes Centre Stage
In a notable shift from policy to enforcement, the TCDA has also commissioned its first cohort of Compliance and Enforcement Officers, marking a new phase in regulation across the tree crops sector.
The officers are mandated to collaborate with security agencies and District Assemblies to clamp down on illegal trading, curb smuggling, enforce licensing requirements and protect both farmers and legitimate operators.
Dr Osei Okrah described the move as a turning point for restoring market discipline and strengthening investor confidence.
“The commissioning of our Compliance and Enforcement Officers gives real effect to our regulatory mandate and ensures that standards are upheld across the cashew value chain,” he said.
A Signal to Global Markets
For the global cashew industry, Ghana’s message from Dubai was unmistakable: quality remains strong, governance has tightened, and the market is open for business.
As competition intensifies among African cashew-producing countries, Ghana is betting that regulation, traceability and enforcement—not just volume—will define its competitive edge in the years ahead.
