Cabinet Approves Ghana’s First National AI Strategy

The Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, Samuel Nartey George, has announced that Cabinet has approved Ghana’s first National Artificial Intelligence (AI) Strategy, marking a major step in the country’s digital transformation agenda.

Speaking at the Data Protection Conference 2026 in Accra under the theme “Your Data, Your Identity: Building Trust in Ghana’s Digital Future,” the Minister disclosed that the strategy will be formally launched in the coming weeks by President John Dramani Mahama.

Strengthening Local AI Expertise

According to Mr. George, the National AI Strategy is designed to:

• Build local AI capacity and expertise

• Promote transparency and fairness in AI systems

• Ensure accountability in AI deployment

• Align Ghana’s AI development with global standards

“The National AI Strategy was approved by Cabinet last week and will be launched in a few weeks by His Excellency,” he stated.

The strategy aims to position Ghana as a competitive player in the emerging AI ecosystem while ensuring that innovation remains responsible and ethical.

Emerging Technologies Framework in the Works

In addition to the AI Strategy, the government is developing an Emerging Technologies Framework to provide structured oversight for advanced digital systems.

The framework will cover:

• Artificial Intelligence applications

• Advanced analytics

• Digital assets

• New digital platforms

“The aim is not to slow innovation but to guide it responsibly so that progress remains aligned,” Mr. George explained.

This dual-policy approach signals government’s intention to balance rapid technological advancement with regulatory safeguards.

Building Trust in Ghana’s Digital Future

The announcement at the Data Protection Conference highlights the growing importance of data governance, digital identity, and cybersecurity in Ghana’s expanding digital economy.

By introducing both a National AI Strategy and an Emerging Technologies Framework, government seeks to:

• Enhance public trust in digital systems

• Encourage responsible innovation

• Attract technology investment

• Support economic growth through digital transformation

With formal launch plans underway, Ghana’s AI Strategy is expected to serve as a foundational blueprint for integrating artificial intelligence into public services, industry, and research while safeguarding ethical standards.
